In autumn 2009 I had the great pleasure of working with the editorial design department of Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, also known as SZ-Magazin, a well-respected German lifestyle and culture magazine which has won numerous awards for its editorial and artistic excellence.
It is the weekly supplement of Süddeutsche Zeitung which, with a circulation of over a million copies, is the largest daily quality newspaper in Germany. During my time there I actively worked at 15 issues of the magazine. Beside participating and contributing in meetings, conferences and discussions, I was able to get my hands dirty on layouts and page making. I helped to select images, colours and typographic treatment, created page layouts and actively contributed ideas and suggestions for both content and design. I collaborated closely with other departments such as photography, text, marketing and pre-press and gained hands-on experience of the editorial design process, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a particularly interesting time as I witnessed the relaunch of the magazine and was involved in implementing and refining the design changes. Shown here are some of the spreads that I designed during this time.
